Math
On Friday we took a mid chapter check to see how the students were doing on the concepts that we have worked on so far in the chapter. This will be coming home in your child's data binder on Tuesday! Please look it over and sign the first parent signature spot of your child's data folder.
This week in math we will be moving on to subtracting two and three digit numbers. We will be using a lot of story problems and sharing strategies that help us to solve subtraction problems. There are a few games under the "Our learning" tab and then under the math section.
Last week I introduced the website www.scootpad.com to the students. This is a website that allows students to work on the skills that we are practicing at school through the internet. It provides them immediate feedback for each problem they do and will bump them to practicing the next skill that I have identified after they are at least 90% accurate on a minimum of 15 problems for that skill. Each child has their own login information for Scootpad. This is inside the front cover of their agenda! This is not a have to at night, but definitely a resource to be using at home. If you have more questions about Scootpad, send me an email and I would be happy to get back to you with more details!

Reading
This week we are continuing to work on the skill of identifying the main idea of a nonfiction text. Last week the goal was for students to be able to pick out the main idea from a nonfiction text from several choices. I also wanted them to be able to identify details from the text that supported that main idea. This week the goal is for them to be able to generate the main idea of the non-fiction text on their own. We have talked about how it sometimes is stated directly in the text, but many times it has to be put together from clues in the text. This is the poster I used to help the students think through how to find the main idea. If you are reading with your child at home, you can use the same language to support them in their learning!
